Phoenix Employment Ministry Services
Phoenix Employment Ministry is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the sheltered homeless and others whose incomes are below the poverty level find and keep satisfying work. We utilize our volunteer network, past clients’ success, and social services work to maximize our impact on our clients’ lives. We also continue to build strategic partnerships with other non-profits in the region to multiply our impact in the community.
Job Coaching – The program is intensive one-on-one coaching. The Job Coach serves as teacher, care giver, cheerleader, and personal job coach. Coaching also emphasizes each individual’s worth and unique gifts. Discovering the job-hunter’s gifts will help guide each individual toward work that is satisfying. They are taught to believe in themselves and the possibilities for their future. The desire is to empower them to become all they have been created to be. The ultimate goal is for each one to be self-sufficient.
Case Management – A new case management service has recently been implemented. The Case Manager will help job-hunters obtain help with a great variety of needs including such things as dental care, obtaining an ID, mental health care, food, medical care, eye care, housing, legal aid, domestic violence issues, and more. Limited financial assistance is available to help with needs such as bus fare, medicine, and personal hygiene items.
Participants are required to dress in professional attire, which we help them obtain, and tardiness is not accepted. They are taught that the job hunt is now their full-time work. It is to be pursued eight hours a day, five days a week just as every other job. Participants come to our offices daily from 8:30am to 3:00pm and have use of work space, phones, computers/internet, fax, and transportation. Time not spent in the office is spent in the field filling out applications, meeting employers, and learning how to meet the person who is responsible for hiring.
Participants become members of a community of job-hunters that meets every day to share ideas, information and support. They also work together making contacts and developing job leads.
Among the skills which the participants will learn are:
Phone Skills and Interview Skills – Role play is used to learn how to use the phone to find work and how to interview with a prospective employer. These exercises also build confidence as job hunters learn how to best market themselves to employers.
Resume Writing – Resume writing serves two purposes, one is to market the job-hunter to employers. The other is to show the job-hunters how many gifts they have, how much experience they have and how valuable they can be to an employer.
Goal Setting – each job hunter is required to set goals and establish a plan to achieve them.
